An
excellent source of vitamin C. They freeze well and make delicious
pies. Due to the pectin content they also make wonderful jam.
|
Redcurrants
and white currants

|
Varieties:
Redcurrants - Jonkheer van Tets
Whitecurrants - White Versailles
The bushes are trained onto trellises for easy picking. They,
like blackcurrants, make excellent pies and can be used as natural
pectin to help strawberry jam set. The red currants can also
be used to make a jelly to accompany roast lamb. |
Gooseberries |
|
Varieties:
Careless and Invicta. Gooseberries are firm and tart early
in the season and are soft and sweet later. The gooseberries
are trained onto a trellis for easier picking.
We also grow Dessert Gooseberries these are red in colour
and much sweeter, varieties: Rokula, Pax and Whinhams
Industry. All gooseberries freeze extremely well and are
delicious in pies, crumbles, fools etc. recipes are available
on request. |
|
|
|
|
Tayberries
These are a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. They
are dark red and have a delicious fragrant flavour. They combine
especially well with both raspberries and blackberries when
in a fruit salad. Tayberries make excellent jam and will also
freeze well. |
 |
 |
Blackberries
A cultivated variety called Silvan is grown at Kenyon Hall.
They are a large sweet variety, with an excellent flavour. They
are more delicate and less seedy than the blackberries found
in hedgerows. Blackberries freeze well and will make good mousses
with wonderful colour and taste. |
Rhubarb
Rhubarb
is making a comeback and we have it for sale from early
May right through till late July. The earlier rhubarb
is always better quality and cooks and tastes so good.
Try chunks of rhubarb and whole strawberries, sweetened
and cooked together in a very low oven. Delicious with
cream. |
 |
|
 |
Garden
Peas
We grow several varieties and plant them at different times
so that they produce peas throughout the season, from late June
to late July. The peas are so sweet they are almost too good
to cook!! |
Sugar
Snap Peas & Mangetout
Increasingly popular with our customers these peas are eaten
whole, pod and all! They are delicious boiled, stir fried or
cold in a salad. Please check the availablility page |
.
|
 |
Broad
Beans
These are easy to pick and they freeze well. They are small
and tender early in the season, but for those who prefer them
more mature, they are better 2 weeks or so later.
. |
Onions
We grow a variety, Sturon, that stores well. So if you collect
them fresh from us with the tops on and leave them to dry they
will keep all winter. |
|
|
|
 |
Beetroot
This is for sale as soon as it is golf ball
size, for those who like young beets, or later on in the season
we sell it at tennis ball size, which if stored correctly will
keep through the winter. |
